Scholarship Description:

The Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, is offering a full-fees Masters scholarship, to provide a unique opportunity to a student of outstanding ability, achievement and potential.

The International Transport Scholarship 2012/13 will fund the fees for an international student to undertake a Masters programme at ITS, on a one year full-time basis. The scholarship forms part of the ITS mission to advance the understanding of transport globally via the development of skills and best practice. It is anticipated that the scholarship recipient will return to their home country after the Masters programme, to apply their new skills to an area of identified need.

Eligibility

Applicants must first hold an offer (conditional or unconditional) of an academic place for an ITS Masters degree for the academic year commencing September 2012.
Applicants must be designated as ‘international fee status’ by the University of Leeds, and not be domiciled in the UK/EU.

Value of the scholarship
The scholarship is a full-fees waiver for the 2012-13 academic year, to the value of £14900.

Application process
To apply for the scholarship applicants must:

Complete and submit the relevant scholarship application form, to include:

a statement of up to 500 words which details how and why a Masters degree from ITS would enable the applicant make a difference to transportation in their country/region, and specifically to tackle a significant problem or issue;

evidence of the applicant’s outstanding ability, achievement and potential;

an outline of the applicant’s career aspirations.

Provide a supporting statement from a referee
[the scholarship referee should be additional to the academic referees].

Preference will be given to applicants who are not in receipt of any other scholarship and
would otherwise be precluded from undertaking a Masters programme.

Terms and conditions
ITS reserves the right not to make a scholarship award or to offer one or more partial fee waivers; the scholarship recipient will be expected support the future development and promotion of the scholarship and ITS, by participating in ITS marketing activities; the academic progress of scholarship recipient will be subject to on-going review – ITS reserves the right to withdraw funding at the end of either semester should academic performance be unsatisfactory; the scholarship cannot be deferred and will lapse if not taken up in September 2012.

The ASM International Fellowship Program encourages research and training collaborations in the microbiological sciences internationally. The Fracture Ottawa Group in the Mechanical Department at the University of Ottawa is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Postdoctoral position in the field of high temperature properties of materials. The research objectives are to develop Deformation Mechanism Maps for Gas Turbine Disc Alloys and will involve both modelling and experimental components. The research is in collaboration with a local company and the candidate will also interact with the Canadian National Research Council.
The candidate should be recent graduate with a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related fields and with a strong background in mechanical properties of materials, especially creep. The PDF position is initially for 1 year, and renewable depending on funding and performance of the candidate. The position will be filled as soon as qualified candidate is identified.

The “TOWARDS AN URBAN ECOSYSTEM. Visions for a Sustainable City” competition notice is online. This international call for proposals for students and young architects has the pourpose of awarding two scholarships for the Master in ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN.
The Master was created by IED Rome in collaboration with the National Institute of Architecture (IN/ARCH), which is recognized as being a Special Scientific Institute by the MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research). The objective is to train professional experts in the field of environmental design by providing them with the skills needed to imagine a different conscious and responsible type of habitat.
The competition invites young architects and graduates to reflect collectively on the issue of a new ecology for urban development by formulating visions, ideas or design proposals for the redevelopment of their own city. This is to be accomplished through three simple digital cards that can travel on a global level to tell the world how our cities could be different, more beautiful, more correct and more in balance with the rest of our living planet.

The Master trains designers to address the complexities of the contemporary city by promoting a true ecology of urban development through two different areas of specialization: Sustainable Urban Design and Landscape Design. These two areas of specialization share the same preparatory aims: to acquire theoretical and practical skills related to the concepts of sustainability, ecology, territory, ecological footprint, renewable energy, bioclimatic design, sustainable mobility and water managment and urban agriculture. Subsequently, the area of expertise offered by the course in Sustainable Urban Design concentrates on the following specializations: designing renewable energy plants, analyzing the thermo-fluid dynamic of buildings and urban systems and developing a design method that is based on both architecture and energy simulation. And, the area of expertise offered by the Landscape Design course focuses on the following specializations: botany, geography, aesthetic and contemporary art, landscape history and design.

Send IED Rome the three proposals by February 15, 2011, to participate in this competition.

MaMaSELF is a two year European Master program in Materials Science, which aims to teach the application of “Large Scale Facilities” for the characterisation and development of materials.

Modern life and globalisation imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterisation of these materials and also the optimising of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at “Large Scale Facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.

MaMaSELF is a two-year full time European Masters program in Materials Science, building up a European platform, strongly involving “Large Scale Research Facilities”. The Masters degree is delivered by two or three out of four universities: Rennes1 (F), Torino (I), TUM and LMU at München (DE).

This Master aims to promote the scientific collaboration between Universities, Large Scale Facilities and Industry. Its main objective is to achieve skilled scientists in Materials Science together with an advanced knowledge in the use of Large Scale Facilities for the characterization of high tech materials.

Criteria are three successful years of full time studies spent in a national BSc course (or equivalent) in Materials Science or related areas (Physics, Chemistry, Geoscience etc…) together with a proficiency level of scientific English, e.g. TOEFL210/550, IELTS6.5, or similar. The enrolment will be limited to 45 students per year to guarantee an excellent professor/student ratio. Several important European Large Scale Facilities (ESRF and ILL (Grenoble, France), LLB Saclay, France), DESY (Hamburg, Germany) and FRM II (Munich, Germany), ELETTRA, Italy) strongly support this Master and will co-organize the summer school and will host students in the fourth semester to follow research activities.

Strongly multidisciplinary lectures in Chemistry, Physics and Material Science will be entirely given in English. Students will receive a double/multiple Master degree in Material Science, giving direct access to further PhD studies.

New Erasmus Mundus Masters Course on Flood Risk Management

On 13 July 2010, the Erasmus Mundus Grant Committe has selected UNESCO-IHE’s proposal on a new Masters Course on Flood Risk Management for funding under the 2010 Erasmus Mundus Action 1 Call for proposal. The new Masters Course will be offered in collaboration with the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

Integrated flood risk management aims to reduce the human and socio-economic losses caused by flooding while at the same time taking into account the social, economic, and ecological benefits from floods and the use of flood plains or coastal zones. The need for the adoption of a holistic integrated approach to managing flood risks has been reflected in the Flood Directive of the European Parliament. Existing Masters programmes on floods offered at EU cover many technical aspects but lack integration. The programme follows the holistic approach and is explicitly designed to cover a wide range of topics – from drivers and natural processes to models, decisions and socio-economic consequences and institutional environment, and is therefore an important advance in water education for Europe.

The Erasmus Mundus Masters Course on Flood risk management is offered by the consortium consisting of UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (the Netherlands), the Technical University of Dresden (Germany), the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia). The associated members include European hydraulics laboratories, namely, DHI (Denmark), Deltares and HR Wallingford (UK), and from key national organisations responsible for flood management, including Rijkswaterstaat (the Netherlands). ICHARM (Japan), and three organisations from Bangladesh are associated members as well. All these partners bring their specific complementary expertise in flood risk management to the EMMC, which graduates educated flood risk professionals with a broad vision of the processes occurring in river basins and in coastal zones at different spatial and temporal scales, and who can master the links between systems, processes and natural and socio-economic constraints for all the aspects of the water cycle.

During the 2-year programme students start at the Technical University of Dresden, where they complete their first semester with 30 ECTS with courses on hydro-meteorological processes, global change and its impact, flood risk management and GIS. Then the students move to UNESCO-IHE for their 2nd semester with 30 ECTS where they receive courses on modelling for planning, forecasting, control and decision support, hazard mapping, ICT, and fluvial flooding and urban flood disasters. Subsequently, the students move to the Technical University of Catalonia to follow part of their 3rd semester with 20 ECTS with courses on hazards due to flash floods, debris flow, coastal flooding, and climate change. The last part of the 3rd semester is hosted by the University of Ljubljana where students follow courses on spatial planning, and socio-economic and institutional framework of flood risk management to earn 10 ECTS. Each semester provides a number of electives, and there are international fieldtrips. Finally, the students carry out their thesis work (30 ECTS) at one of HIEs or with an industrial partner. Successful candidates receive MSc degrees from the Technical University of Dresden, UNESCO-IHE and the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona.

Master Scholarships for the Master in Particle Physics at Université Blaise Pascal

The 2nd year of the Master of Physics at Clermont-Ferrand1 welcomes students from France and abroad, provided they have passed the Master 1 exams, or possess the background expected after 4 years of Physics. To promote mobility and excellence, a number of 5,000 euros fellowships have been opened this year to the best candidates satisfying high level academic criteria.

Teaching program:

-200 hours of advanced lectures in particle physics include: field theory, symmetries in Physics, particle physics detectors, Quantum Electro-Dynamics, Quantum Chromo-Dynamics, Electro-Weak Standard Model. Part of the lectures are given in english; a good command of both the French and English languages is required.

-5 months of research training in a research laboratory. The LPC (Laboratoire de Physique Corpusculaire) of Clermont is one of the 18 laboratories of the French Institute for Particle Physics of the CNRS (IN2P3). Research is conducted in world-wide Particle Physics facilities, such as CERN (Geneva) or Fermilab (Chicago). For instance, research teams of the laboratory, which regularly host research trainings at the Master and PhD level, are involved in 3 of the four experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, both for instrumental developments of detectors and for the Physics analysis.

Research opportunities:
The Master diploma of the Blaise Pascal University allows holders to apply for any PhD fellowship in High Energy Physics in Europe and in the world (US, Japan). Typically 3 or 4 PhD fellowships are available each year at the Blaise Pascal University for the students having passed the Master of Physics.

Course synopsis

These unique programmes address what is perhaps the most important issue of our time from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The courses aim to provide state-of-the-art training for the rapidly expanding market in climate change professionals within the public, private, consultancy and not-for-profit sectors and the development field.

The programmes are multidisciplinary and students will acquire specialist knowledge of the causes of climate change, the physical and human consequences, and efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate. In the Development course particular attention is paid to the specific consequences of climate change for poverty in developing countries; processes of adaptation; and policy responses.

Courses are taught by leading researchers in these fields from within the Geography Department and the world renowned Institute for Development Studies (IDS) and Science and Technology Policy Research Unit (SPRU). Students have the opportunity to develop a specialist thematic or regional enquiry in the dissertation.
