M.Sc. in Maritime Affairs
The M.Sc. program, in Malmö, Sweden, responds directly to the needs of the maritime industry, equipping graduates with the skills necessary for a successful career. The M.Sc. program offers 4 specializations:

Ph.D. in Maritime Affairs
The Ph.D. program, in Malmö, Sweden, is a research degree related to the IMO mission of safety, security, and environmental protection with specializations in:

The program consists of 240 ECTS credits, requires 3-6 years on a full- or part-time basis. Candidates who have completed part of a doctoral program elsewhere may be granted advanced standing, in which case the minimum permissible period of enrollment includes registration, one progression seminar, and the dissertation (120 ECTS credits), and requires a minimum of 12 months. The Ph.D. tuition is a credit-based university fee, includes supervision, access to the library and research laboratories, and IT support. An approved research proposal earns 20 ECTS credits, successful completion of 4 progression seminars, each earn 40 ECTS credits, successful defence of a dissertation earns 60 ECTS credits.

Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities

The University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities has been given a substantial grant to enhance postgraduate research, thanks to the Wolfson Foundation, a charity that awards grants to support and promote excellence in the fields of science and medicine, health, education, and the arts and humanities.

The Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities will be available in three disciplines – history, literature and languages. The Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities pay:

Eligibility

Grants

[Master] MSc Research Opportunity in Environmental Chemistry at Dublin City University

Project Title: Chemical analysis of novel contaminants in the Irish aquatic environment and their potential to bioconcentrate and bioaccumulate up the food chain.

Funding Agency: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government.

Description: The project shall concentrate on using established techniques to measure novel environmental contaminants, particularly pharmaceuticals in the Irish aquatic environment and their bioconcentration ability. The various pharmaceuticals under investigation (including antibiotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, lipid regulators, anti-convulsants and beta-blockers), are known to be present in Irish municipal effluents. Chemical analysis of pharmaceuticals in treated municipal effluent and receiving waters (freshwater and marine) shall be undertaken using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by analysis by LC/MS/MS to identify and quantify these compounds. The ability of these compounds to bioconcentrate shall be investigated by chemical analysis on various tissues from bioindicator species, marine and freshwater bivalve mussels (Mytilus edulis and the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha respectively) exposed in vivo and in situ to individual compounds, mixtures and complex effluents. Bioaccumulation through the food chain with the potential for human exposure shall also be investigated using multi-tropic level studies.

The student shall be primarily based in the Irish Separation Science Cluster (ISSC) lab in DCU where the chemical analysis shall be undertaken, but shall be working as part of a team on an EPA funded environmental toxicology project located in the Irish Centre for Environmental Toxicology (ICET) in GMIT, where all in vivo and exposure aspects of the project shall be undertaken. Project supervision shall be from both DCU (Prof Brett Paull) and GMIT (Dr Brian Quinn), with the degree awarded from DCU.

Requirements/Background: Candidates should posses a primary degree (minimum II:I) in a relevant discipline (Chemistry). A good understanding and experience of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry is an advantage. Computer literacy is essential. Candidates must have European driving licence, be willing to travel to various test sites around the country and to visit/work in GMIT on occasion. Studentship is subject to performance that is satisfactory to both DCU/GMIT and the EPA.

Project Start-Date: May 2010

Project Duration: 2 years (with possible transfer to PhD register).

Conditions: €1,333.33 per month plus fees and travel budget.

Lund University announces the following vacancy:
POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP in chemistry, within the discipline of chemical physics, with placement at the Department of Chemistry, Division of Chemical Physics , Faculty of Science.

Description: The project is devoted to study energy flow in molecular light harvesting antennas using single molecule spectroscopy (SMS) and fluorescence microscopy techniques. Particularly interesting antennas are J-aggregates – organized ensembles of hundreds of molecules with coherently coupled excited states. SMS makes visible phenomena like fluorescence blinking and fluctuations of other optical property that are not observable in bulk materials due to ensemble-averaging. These phenomena gives us “inside” information on energy redistribution between chromophores and on excited state quenching by generating of “dark” states. With new techniques developed in our group it will be possible to measure geometrical parameters (size, shape etc) of individual nano-antennas and correlate them with energy transport properties.

Qualifications:
Expertise/qualification required from the candidate: master degree in chemistry or physics; strong basic education in general physics, physical chemistry, optics, laser physics, mathematics and quantum mechanics; experience in programming; experience in operation with general electronic equipment (generators, oscilloscopes etc).

What it can do for the world
Providing a nursery for the pure sciences, this area seeks to take responsibility for the continued progress and development of the university’s scientific foundation. Providing deep insight within core disciplines, the basic sciences are also a source of nourishment to the applied sciences and, ultimately, to society at large.

What we’re building on
Pure physics, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry and computer science provide a large part of our platform. We are an eclectic group of researchers dedicated to answering the calls of our chosen sciences. Some are leading experts in such specialised fields that our closest colleagues are on the other side of the planet. This is the nature of studying the universe.

Our fundamental physics research group addresses questions within elementary particle physics and mathematical physics. And in particular, within string theory and supersymmetric field theories, where both formal issues and future applications in other bordering fields are investigated. Engaged in large experimental facilities such as CERN in Geneva and GSI/FAIR in Darmstadt, the group also explores subatomic physics, nuclear astrophysics, and many-body systems.

The driving force behind our geoscience research is to understand the Earth system – which in turn
provides a basic knowledge for a sustainable future. Present research includes the atmospheric water cycle, volcano and industrial emissions, ozone depletion, forest biomass, sea ice, and the crust, rotation and interior of the Earth.

The research we perform in Mathematics comprises complex analytic geometry, algebraic geometry, harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, analytic number theory, and discrete mathematics – or probability theory. We also have close collaborations with theoretical computer science in the areas of combinatorics, discrete mathematics, probability and logic.

The Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics group works closely with the Swedish National Facility for Radio Astronomy at Onsala Space Observatory. Areas of research include the evolution of galaxies with emphasis on starbursts and active galactic nuclei, cosmology, formation of stars and planets, late stages of stellar evolution, and astrochemistry.

The Theoretical Chemistry group focuses on fundamental perspectives on principle chemical reactions such as catalysis, high-temperature corrosion, and bio-nano-photo-voltaics. Areas of research also include contributions to fundamental quantum chemistry and an “octet rule” is developed for predicting new superconducting materials.

Our research in Theoretical Computer Science is within the areas of algorithms, logic, formalization of mathematics, and programming language theory. Our research is performed in close contact with neighbouring sciences, such as mathematics, philosophy, biology, and linguistics.

Process Overview

The position

The successful candidate will conduct doctoral studies within the fundamental sciences, in line with the intentions described in the application. The position will be placed at the department of the candidate’s choice.

The position is limited to maximum five years and corresponds to full-time research studies during four years. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curricula at Chalmers could be included corresponding to one year, teaching work distributed over the whole time of the position.

The specific aim of the five year period is for the PhD student to develop a high degree of independence and a general problem solving ability to make a continued successful carrier in either academia or industry possible.

Required qualifications
