Up to Seven Doctoral Fellowships in Economic Sociology and Political Economy

The International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE), which is conducted jointly by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies and the University of Cologne, invites suitable candidates to apply for its doctoral program.

Applicants must hold a Diplom or a Masters degree in political science, sociology, organization studies, or related fields. Degrees must be received by September 2012. Program details and an online application form can be found at

Fellowships will start on October 1, 2012. They will be awarded for 15 months with the option of two additional years. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of 1,100 EUR that will increase by 100 EUR each year. The working language at the Research School is English. A command of German is useful but not required. Doctoral fellows will participate in a graduate school program including courses and summer school sessions and will take part in the intellectual life of the Institute and the University.

Doctoral degrees are awarded by the University of Cologne. Arrange- ments with other universities in Germany and abroad are possible in individual cases. Students at the IMPRS-SPCE may also acquire a French doctorate by entering a joint doctoral program with Sciences Po in Paris (cotutelle).

Scholarship Description:

One scholarship of £10,000 is awarded to a student from any country.

Eligibility
The scholarships are open to applicants who have an excellent academic record and who are applying for admission onto the Full-time MBA or MBA in International Business in September 2012. An award may be withdrawn if a student fails to meet the academic standards set by the University.

Although applications for the scholarships should be made before 31 May 2012, the scholarships will only be awarded to applicants who have firmly accepted their offer through payment of the deposit. Applicants who hold full sponsorships are not eligible for the scholarship.

If an applicant is successful in being awarded a scholarship, but subsequently declines their offer of admission on the MBA programme, the award of the scholarship will be withdrawn and awarded to another applicant.

Applying
Applicants should submit a 1000 word essay, explaining why they feel they should be awarded the scholarship, and how the scholarship will benefit them.

This essay should accompany the application for admission to the MBA programme.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and the benefits to the student. The decision will be made by a committee consisting of Directors and key staff from Admissions.

Notification

Scholarship Description:

The Middle East Rule of Law Masters Scholarships Program (MEROL) offers fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to masters degrees. Eligible fields include:

law (LLM)
public policy / public administration
media / communications studies
gender / women’s studies.

The program aims to assist in the creation of a critical mass of reform-minded professionals in the Middle East working in fields crucial to the development and sustainability of open societies.

In conceiving of the foundations of the “Rule of Law” to include the healthy functioning of various public sectors beyond law itself, MEROL represents an extension of the Open Society Foundations’ Palestinian Rule of Law Program (PROL). Since 2003, the PROL program has supported over 50 LLM fellowships for Palestinian lawyers who are now engaged in law reform, teaching, and the development of a Palestinian rule of law infrastructure.

Funded by the Open Society Foundations and host partner universities, and administered by the Open Society Foundations, the program supports Middle Eastern students from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Iraq who demonstrate both academic excellence and strong leadership potential.

Ten MA awards in the fields listed above are available annually. Five LLM (Masters of Law) awards are available annually.

Grantees agree to live in their home countries for at least two years upon degree completion in the United States.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

be legally resident in Egypt, Jordan , Iraq, Lebanon, or Syria at the time of application
demonstrate an excellent academic record and have an advanced degree (minimum: bachelor’s)
display impressive civil society leadership potential
prove through testing and interviews strong English language ability (minimum TOEFL score of 480)
be able to begin the program in August or September, 2012
be able to receive and maintain a U.S. J-1 visa
participate in an intensive academic writing program prior to departure to U.S.
commit to returning to the home country upon degree completion

Employees of the Open Society Foundations directly involved in the administration of scholarships are not eligible; nor are individuals receiving other Open Society Foundations-funded support during the fellowship period.

Competition will be merit based and selection made on the basis of academic excellence, professional aptitude, leadership potential in the field of specialization, and proven commitment to open society values.

Guidelines

The fellowship provides:

The fellowship does NOT provide:

Pre-selection and Testing

Submitted applications will be screened by representatives from OSF and potential host universities. Applicants chosen to continue in the competition as semifinalists will be required to take the TOEFL.

Interviews and Final Selection

Semifinalists will be interviewed in-person or via videoconference by a committee of representatives from OSF and potential US host universities. The committee will recommend finalists for placement at host universities.

Fellows are matched with U.S. universities according to their academic and professional goals and experience. Decisions concerning host university placement are made by the program selection committee, which includes university graduate admissions staff and faculty. Each placement is available on the basis of previously negotiated agreements between OSF and the participating universities. Finalists are therefore not responsible for finding appropriate degree programs.

In some cases MEROL MA fellowship funding may be extended for six months after completion of the degree to cover public-sector and non-profit internships. More information about internship opportunities will be shared with the finalists during the fellowship year.

As J-1 visa recipients, grantees will be required to live for up to two years in their home country after completing their degree. The Open Society Foundations support the J-1 policy, and expect grantees to apply the expertise the fellowship has given them to the improvement of their home communities.

All finalists attend a mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation and intensive academic writing program in the summer preceding the award as well as other Open Society Foundations-sponsored events during the fellowship period. The costs associated with these activities are covered by the fellowship.

Fellows must uphold the academic and ethical standards of the host institution and undertake full-time study for the duration of the program. Failure to maintain academic and professional standards will result in dismissal from the program.

The program is administered by the Open Society Foundations and funded by the Open Society Foundations and host universities.

Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are awarding one full tuition scholarship for a qualified applicant with a background or experience in interacting with public health and/or humanitarian and development aid agencies in addition to an interest in pursuing a career in humanitarian logistics to undertake the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program in the academic year 2011-2012.

The scholarship holder must make a contractual commitment to work for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for a period of at least two years upon graduation of the ZLOG Program.

Through this scholarship, the Foundation hopes to attract outstanding future leaders who can make a vital contribution to filling the capacity gap in humanitarian aid organizations for well-trained supply chain and logistics professionals dedicated to the field of health and humanitarian logistics.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian aid organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters in more than 70 countries. MSF has been setting up emergency medical aid missions around the world since 1971. In countries where health structures are insufficient or even non-existent, MSF collaborates with authorities such as the Ministry of Health to provide assistance. MSF works in rehabilitation of hospitals and dispensaries, vaccination programs and water and sanitation projects and it also works in remote health care centers, slum areas and provides training of local personnel. All this is done with the objective of rebuilding health structures to acceptable levels. Finally, in carrying out humanitarian assistance, MSF seeks also to raise awareness of crisis situations.

Zaragoza Logistics Center (ZLC) partnered in 2003 with the Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL) at MIT to form the MIT-Zaragoza International Logistics Program which is a unique research and education partnership that brings together the supply chain interests of academia, industry and government – all linked to the development of the largest logistics park in Europe, PLAZA. Coverage

The scholarship covers full tuition for the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program, which amounts to €21,500 to a student of the academic year 2011-2012.

The scholarship will not include other costs such as living or travel expenses to Zaragoza or to Boston for the international exchange.

Eligibility

Scholarships are awarded only to students who have been admitted to the MIT-Zaragoza Master of Engineering in Logistics & Supply Chain Management (ZLOG) program through the Foundation’s regular admissions procedure.

The applicants should display exceptional academic achievement and distinctive personal accomplishment in addition to an interest in pursuing a career in humanitarian logistics. To be eligible you must comply with the following criteria:

The primary social and economic value of modern societies is knowledge. For this reason, mastering Information technology for handling information, recorded in Datawarehouses or the Web, is essential to the development of individuals and society.

Data Mining and Knowledge Management (DMKM) has become essential for improving the competitiveness of businesses and increasing access to knowledge. DMKM still comes up, however, against major scientific and technological obstacles. This European Master in DMKM proposes specialized training in this field.

The consortium is composed of six universities from four countries: France (University of Pierre and Marie Curie Paris 6, University of Lyon Lumière Lyon 2, Polytec’Nantes), Romania (University Polithenica of Bucharest), Italy (University of East Piedmont) and Spain (Technical University of Catalonia). The Master in DMKM is based on experience in multi-site teaching gained from the Master’s degree in Knowledge Extraction from Data, which has been running since 1999 within three members of the consortium.

The Master in DMKM is aimed at students from all over the world. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in one of the fields of computer science, mathematics or statistics, as well as a good level of English (at least TOEFL 550 or equivalent). Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure. Classes are taught in English and the course is composed of 18 modules of about sixty hours each. The course runs over 4 semesters. The first semester is devoted to basic training, and includes subjects in mathematics, statistics, databases, etc., whereas the two following ones are devoted to acquire two specialties among six ones, such as Complex Data Mining, Information retrieval, Knowledge acquisition and management, etc. The fourth semester is targeted to the writing of a dissertation in either a laboratory or a company. Language classes will also be provided to ensure that students integrate as well as possible in socio-cultural terms in the host country. Each student must spend at least one semester in at least two of the four countries. Students that have obtained 120 ECTS will automatically obtain national Master degrees from the countries in which they have studied. Classes are transmitted via video-conferencing. They are also recorded and accessible online. Students can benefit, on their site of residence, from support in the form of tutoring for each course. Tuition fees are 4,000 €/year for European students and 8,000 €/year for other students. All candidates may apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarships.

INSEAD Scholarships are the most sought-after source of financial assistance. They are limited in number and there is significant competition for each award. These scholarships are granted under various criteria and essentially there are two basic categories of scholarships:

Scholarship Description:

MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Masters course in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American Universities and supported by the European Commission. MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental challenges, especially in an international context.

The MESPOM study programme is in English and lasts two years. The students study in at least three out of six consortium universities: the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), Central European University (Budapest), the University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece), Middlebury College and its affiliate Monterey Institute for International Studies (MIIS) (USA), and the University of Saskatchewan (UoS) (Canada).

MESPOM invites applications from all countries. Successful candidates must have a good first degree in a subject related to environmental sciences, policy and management such as biology, geography, other earth sciences, civil engineering, urban or landscape planning, resource economics or specialised disciplines (environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental economics, environmental policy). Candidates with other first degrees are also considered if they show commitment to environmental careers, usually through work experience. Admission is based on the academic and intellectual excellence of applicants as well as their motivation and prior experience. All candidates should demonstrate proficiency in English. In order to create a multicultural learning environment, the Consortium strives to achieve a balance between various geographic and disciplinary backgrounds of MESPOM students.

General requirements
Applicants to MESPOM must have earned a first (Bachelor’s or equivalent) degree (not less than 3 years of full-time studies) from a recognized university or institution of higher education, or provide documentation indicating that they will earn their first degree from such an institution by the time of enrolling in MESPOM.

Language Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. Those applicants whose first language is not English must submit standardized English language test scores, e.g., the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Students taking TOEFL should request a copy of their results to be sent to the CEU Admissions Office. The CEU test code is 0069. Other substitute tests of English language are noted below.
