Scholarship Description:

One PhD mobility scholarship within the areas listed above is available at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy as from 1 May, 2012 or shortly thereafter.

This mobility scholarship is intended for students, who are not currently enrolled at or have not previously obtained a degree from the University of Southern Denmark. Applicants with a Master’s degree may apply. A PhD project defined in collaboration with one of the two supervisors listed below is an integral part of the application.

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy employs 36 tenure researchers covering a wide scientific area within life sciences within which the department has several cross-disciplinary activities.

A PhD study at the Faculty of Science is a three-year programme which requires a Master’s degree. The application should include a short proposal outlining a research project within the areas of “Chemical Lake Restoration” or “Drug Transport & Delivery” as described in detail below. This proposal must be written in collaboration with Associate Professor Ulla Gro Nielsen or Professor Martin Brand, respectively.

PhD Project: Chemical Lake Restoration
We have an opening for a PhD project to work on phosphate remediation in freshwater bodies using physical, analytical and environmental chemistry. This interdisciplinary project involves researchers at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy (PCP) and Centre for Lake Restoration (CLEAR), Institute of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The project aims at achieving a molecular level understanding of current and potentially new inorganic materials used to restore freshwater systems. This project will investigate how the chemical structure of these materials dictate their ability to selectively sequester phosphate and further study the stability of the products in the environment. The project combines analytical chemistry with NMR spectroscopy (liquid and solid state) with limnology.

The candidate must have a strong interest in employing inorganic chemistry and experimental characterization techniques to solve environmental problems in freshwater biology. He/she is expected to have a Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related degree with significant chemistry curriculum e.g. through course or thesis work. The applicant should be highly motivated, independent and able to work in an interdisciplinary environment. Travel to international research facilities and field trips are an integral part of the project.

PhD Project: Drug Transport & Delivery
The successful candidate will conduct a PhD project within drug transport and delivery, more precisely dealing with drugs of limited solubility and/or oral bioavailability as well as formulation strategies to overcome such challenges. The project includes investigation into solubility, dissolution and in-vitro permeability properties of drugs, by using approaches developed in our team, as well as novel NMR- methods currently under development. Our aim is to better understand the mechanisms behind bioavailability-improvement especially of solubility-enhancing formulations.

The candidate is expected to have a Master’s degree in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences. He/she should have a strong interest in physicochemical, analytical and cell-culture techniques. Candidates with a solid background in physical pharmacy, formulation design or bio-pharmaceutics will be preferred. The applicant should be reliable and interested in working within an interdisciplinary and international team. Integral part of the project is the exchange with research partners abroad.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1 October 2008 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The European Master in Sustainable Regional Health Systems is a two years long interdisciplinary programme of 120 ECTS that aims to give vision, knowledge and tools to develop and manage coherent health systems that contribute both to health and sustainable regional development in their regional communities.

About Us

The academic activity in Health Management is already highly sophisticated and a number of courses have similar philosophies and modules. However most programmes do not consider policy issues such as the socio economic situation of each country, and non of them approaches the topic of health management and planning on a regional level.
European Master in Sustainable Regional Health Systems aims to fill the gap in Health Management by approaching the theme of health system management and planning on a regional level. This Master promotes the benchmarking of the different health system models helping to construct the comprehensive health system management and planning, including both, health care and promotion, as well as the interrelation between health and socio-economic areas. It aims to spread out the European model of health promotion and health planning, sustainability and the role of health system in social cohesion and strengthening of social capital.
Admission
Admission may be granted to applicants who meet the following common admission criteria:

A university degree in Sociology, Psychology, Law, Political Science, Anthropology, History, Medicine, Social Work, Social Education, Nursing, Public Health etc, that they want to specialize in the scope of the health.
Candidates are required to have a recognized qualification in the language of instruction of the university that they plan to attend. Knowledge of languages of the place of study is an asset.

Scholarship Description:

Applications are invited for these 3 or 4 year awards from individuals with a strong academic record who wish to develop a career in primary care research.

Awards are offered at all eight Universities within the NIHR School of Primary Care Research: Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Keele, London (University College), Manchester, Oxford, and Southampton. Details of the specific research training opportunities available at each University are listed below.

As the eight Universities do not always offer mentorship in every discipline relevant to primary care, it is possible to apply for a “linked” award so that applicants can benefit from training within the School but maintain a link with a University outside the School that can provide discipline-specific mentoring.

Awards will normally be taken up in October 2010.

Studentships

Applicants for Studentships must have a first degree in a discipline relevant to primary care research and will be expected to complete a PhD/DPhil during the award period.

The precise academic qualifications required depend on the University and training offered.

Studentship awards include fees and an annual tax-free stipend of £18000.

Fellowships

Applicants for Fellowships must have experience of research in primary care or a closely related field of medicine. A doctoral degree is desirable but applicants who have not had the opportunity to undertake doctoral training will be considered if they have substantial relevant experience.

Remuneration for Fellowships will depend on previous experience but most appointees will receive a salary of £25000-£35000 per annum. Appointments are usually for 3 or 4 years duration with the expectation that appointees will then be in a position to apply for more senior academic posts (e.g. lectureships).
Fellowship awards will not in general be based around a specified single project but will involve attachment to a research group involved in a programme of research. The ongoing research programmes in the participating Universities are listed below. The awards are open to all disciplines relevant to primary care research, clinical non-medical and non-clinical, although the individual Universities vary in the disciplinary opportunities they offer.

The European Master of Science Programme in International Health is part of tropEd, a network of 33 European and 7 non-European institutions for higher education. In existence since 1996, tropEd collaborates closely with institutions in Asia, Africa, and the Americas in providing postgraduate education and training opportunities.

The European Master of Science Programme in International Health is a one year, full-time study programme taught in English excepted in Mexico (in spanish). Salary is according to the general policies of NTNU.
Depending on qualifications and academic background, Research Fellows at the Faculty of Medicine will be remunerated at wage levels 45-55 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 353 000 – NOK 420 600 a year, of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. A yearly amount for operating costs will be added.

The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees in Norway.

Scholarship Description:

The School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences will award a maximum of two International Undergraduate Scholarships in each Undergraduate Program each year, to commencing Fee Paying Overseas Students.

Students must be enrolled in one of the following Undergraduate Degree Programs to gain one of the scholarships as listed:

* Bachelor of Pharmacy * Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine * Bachelor of Nutrition and Food Sciences * Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences * Bachelor of Medical Sciences

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence to outstanding students. Applicants must have attained the necessary entry requirements as outlined in the current University ‘Programs, Fees and Entry Requirements for International Students’ booklet.

Scholarships are valued at 25% of the total program fees, depending on the scholarship awarded.

Students will be selected on merit and are expected to maintain satisfactory performance throughout the duration of their degree program, including, where appropriate, honours (as defined in University policy).
