PhD student in the field of Economics of Innovation and Technological Change
at Eindhoven University of Technology in Netherlands
The Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciencess (IE&IS) has several BSc and MSc programmes. Education and research in the department focus on the development and use of technology in a business and society-oriented context. Research is design and application oriented, based on fundamental scientific insights and methods. Main areas of interest are operations management, innovation management and policy and human-technology interaction.
The Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciencess (IE&IS) is seeking applications for a PhD position in the field of Economics of Innovation and Technological Change. The research project “Co-Producing Service Innovations: “Fiber Infrastructure and Strategic Use of ICT applications by SMEs” is conducted within the Eindhoven Centre for Innovation Studies (ECIS, for more information see http://ecis.ieis.tue.nl/ )
Project description
There is a need to develop a framework for local government involvement in fibre infrastructure initiatives in industrial parks as traditional market failure rationales provide insufficient justifications to foster diffusion of fibre based services in SMEs. Research on the deployment of fibre infrastructure has until recently been focused on the new quality of fibre technologies in leading to market failure, but mostly ignored the adoption of advanced ICT applications running on these new infrastructures by SMEs. The empirical literature on ICT applications in companies has not been of much help in this respect as the case studies discussed are mostly linked to particular industries but seldom to the underlying broadband infrastructure.
Recently nation-wide (undertaken by CBS) and European-wide studies (by e.g. EU Business Watch) have tried to complement these studies, but have been limited with respect to questions about new ICT applications (such as real-time security camera observations at industrial parks or direct routing). However, these new applications have been vital in explaining emerging patterns of ICT adoption by SMEs. For example, it has been proposed that real-time camera observations provide for the bulk of new growth in traffic coming from SMEs located at different industrial parks in Eindhoven. In addition, new patterns of adoption of ICT seem emerge due to direct routing based on peering.
Requirements
